United
Empire Loyalists first settled here in 1798 building the
tiny communities of Amherst and Hamilton. The settlement
was renamed Cobourg in 1819 in honor of the marriage of
Princess Charlotte to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg, Germany.
Cobourg enjoyed a significant building boom in the 1800s.
Victoria Hall (pictured left) is considered the pride of
Cobourg and was officially opened by the Prince of Wales
in 1850. Victoria Hall is the home of the Art Gallery of
Northumberland featuring works of local, regional, national
and international significance, predominantely by Canadian
artists.
Located approximately 1 hour east
of Toronto, Cobourg is a town rich in history and natural
beauty nestled at the foot of Lake Ontario, known also as
Ontario's "Feel Good" town. Grand Historic homes
compliment the graphic tree-lined streets and the Cobourg
Beach and Cobourg Marina are second to none. In addition
to its stately and colourful past, Cobourg boasts great
shopping as well as fine dining and entertainment.
